Arkas Art Bornova
Housed within the historic Mattheys Mansion, one of the finest buildings of its period and restored by Arkas Holding, Arkas Art Bornova is home to the Arkas Carpet Collection. Assembled over a period of more than 30 years, the Arkas Carpet Collection has become one of the world’s most significant carpet collections in its field, bringing together exceptional examples of Classical Anatolian Carpets, Regional Anatolian Carpets, Ottoman Palace Carpets, and European tapestries. At Arkas Art Bornova Mattheys Mansion, visitors can view Anatolian carpets produced in Western and Central Anatolia between the 16th and 19th centuries.
The finest examples of handwoven carpets, one of the most significant elements of our cultural heritage, were produced in Anatolia through a carpet-weaving tradition passed down from generation to generation, earning Türkiye recognition as a land renowned for its carpets.
For centuries, Turkish carpets were prized as symbols of wealth, status, and prestige. They were presented as diplomatic gifts and served as a source of inspiration for Western artists, appearing in masterpieces of European painting.
